November Sunrise
Cristina Sills
I do not know how to take the November sunrise,
this vivid, hot, intense yellow-orange
glowing down onto frigid earth, dead leaves, and dull grey faces.
It is not the autumn when there are still remnants of summer, and
not the autumn when winter is a marauder, merciless.
November is limbo, a strange in-between.
The dead are dying and the living are being born.
The sun glows deceivingly sultry—
cold wind breaks the heat before it arrives at our fingertips.
It is a time when dreams march into a hollow land.
The harvest moon in purpling sky and angry frost
covers the hard city streets.
What do I tell my heart in its confusion?
