  Waitress pours
  A customer a cup of coffee,
  Steaming black brew suspended
  In mid-air;
  Cigarette perches on an ashtray,
  Smoke frozen in time
  Like a pale gray snake.
  A spoonful of eggs
  Pauses inches before
  An open mouth.
  Dead silence.
  Studying each subject
  With childlike fascination,
  They take note.
  Measurements are taken;
  Hypotheses are proposed.
  Upon their departure,
  The jukebox comes to life.
  The coffee cup is filled,
  And a customer
  Chews happily.
  The rest of the day unfolds.
